In the past week, Americans were more likely to come across news about former President Donald Trump than Vice President Kamala Harris, according to The Breakthrough, a CNN polling project that monitors what the public is hearing, reading, and seeing about the presidential candidates during the campaign. 


After a series of high-profile events that captured attention across the political spectrum— including the presidential debate and the first assassination attempt on Trump — this week's data reveals a sharp divide in what Democrats and Republicans recalled hearing about the GOP nominee. Republicans largely focused on the assassination attempt in Florida earlier this month, while Democrats were more likely to mention Trump’s unfounded claims about Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio.


In the latest survey, conducted September 20-23 by SSRS and Verasight on behalf of a research team from CNN, Georgetown University, and the University of Michigan, three-quarters of Americans said they had come across at least some news about Trump. This slightly outpaced the 69% who reported hearing news about Vice President Kamala Harris. This marks a shift from late August and early September, when both candidates had roughly equal media exposure.


Republicans were significantly more likely than Democrats to mention the word "assassination" and related terms, such as references to the golf course where the attempt on Trump’s life occurred.. Read More
